Our Team

Our Values

Our Mission

“To be our Client’s most trusted Family Financial Advisor”

Our Values

  • Commitment to added value.
  • To work with the interests of the client in mind.
  • To invest based on value, not emotion.
  • Value long-term relationships with our clients.

The Value of Independence

Here at Carlson Asset Management, we believe that the independent advisor model is the best model in the industry. After Bruce spent many years with a large brokerage firm, he felt that these institutions do not work to put the client first, and are more focused on their own bottom line. Many of the large institutions in the industry do not encourage their brokers to serve clients with “small accounts” and these clients end up not getting the attention they deserve. Here at Carlson Asset Management, we do not believe in account minimums and are happy to work with you regardless of the size of your portfolio. In fact, some of our biggest clients started with very small accounts. With Kestra Investment Services, LLC. as our broker-dealer, we have been able to elevate our practice in a way that strives to put our clients first. We are not held to sales quotas and are not pressured to sell certain products. With us, you can be certain that our recommendations to you are with your interests in mind.

Long-Term Client-Advisor Relationships

We value the relationships we have with our clients and their families. In order to achieve healthy long-term relationships with our clients, we act in the best interest of our clients, and strive to achieve superior financial planning, asset management, and client service.

Our Process

A detailed planning process is the best way to establish financial security. Once we get to know you we can begin to develop a dynamic plan that will meet your immediate needs and goals while adjusting for changes in your professional and social life down the road. We are in it together for the long haul.

So what are the steps?

1) Introductory Meeting

This is the first part of establishing a fruitful partnership, so be prepared! In this phase we will identify your goals, priorities, preferences, as well as potential obstacles. Along with this, we will mutually establish what your expectations are for us and whether an ongoing partnership is the right fit.

2) Exploration Phase

Based on our introductory meeting, we now want to take a deeper dive into your situation. During this session we can begin to sketch a preliminary plan as we engage in a more comprehensive discussion about your personal and financial goals. The more open this phase is, the more detailed our plan can be.

3) Detailed Planning

Now it is time to set you up with a plan. Based on the prior discussions, we can deliver an easy to follow roadmap that will lead you towards your financial goals. We will specifically address the areas that are of greatest importance to you: retirement savings, early investment options, risk management, insurance, first time home ownership, estate planning, and detail the steps needed to conquer each obstacle.

4) Ongoing Aid and Advice

Your priorities and goals will inevitably shift through time which is why we are here to proactively prepare your plan. We embrace change. As your life circumstances facilitate a different approach to financial planning, wealth management, and savings options, we will be a constant presence to ensure that your plan transitions along with you.

Investment Philosophy

Here at Carlson Asset Management, we use Dorsey Wright as a leading provider of technical research. Their research platform is a complete technical analysis solution; from broad market insights, to portfolio management tools and investment models, all the way to Point and Figure charts on over 40,000 stocks, funds, and ETFs traded around the world. These are the same tools we use to direct our own money management products.

We use this vast wealth of knowledge to differentiate ourselves and offer value-added research and insight beyond standard asset allocation. Our research platform empowers analysts with tools and market insights that make it possible to do that in a time-efficient way.

We would be happy to invite you into our office for a complimentary no obligation review of your brokerage account or employer sponsored retirement plan. We will analyze the portfolio to measure its relative strength vs other asset classes, and whether or not it is suitable for your risk tolerance.

Investment Methods

Point and Figure Charting

Point and Figure Charting strongly focuses on the “price” of a security, because it is the ultimate determinant of supply and demand in the marketplace. When you cut through all the red tape on Wall Street, what moves security prices is supply and demand. It is nothing more than ECONOMICS 101. We know why tomatoes in the winter don’t taste very good, don’t have a very long shelf life and are expensive. The same forces that move prices in the supermarket move the stock market. When all is said and done, if there are more buyers than sellers willing to sell, the price will move higher. If there are more sellers than buyers willing to buy, the price will move lower. Analyzing the price action of a security can yield important information as to who is winning the battle for that security — supply or demand. The Point & Figure methodology has been around for over 100 years. One of the first proponents of the methodology was Charles Dow, the first editor of the Wall Street Journal. Charles Dow was a fundamentalist at heart, yet he understood the importance of the supply and demand relationship in any stock. The Point & Figure methodology is just a logical, organized way of recording the forces of supply and demand. We use this time-tested approach every day managing our client accounts.

Become a Client

Philosophy

Becoming a client with us is as easy as it is rewarding. Our client relationships span a lifetime and we look forward to getting to know you. We are licensed in many states and our clients span the entire country. As a Certified Financial Planner® Bruce believes it is important to have a complete understanding of your overall financial, insurance, business, and estate plan issues. To that end we work closely with your Attorney and Accountant where need be. Should you not have either of these advisors we can arrange an introduction to one of several professionals we work with.

Your first meeting with us

Ideally we would like to spend our first meeting in our office getting to know one another. There is no fee or obligation for this meeting, and it will give both of us an opportunity to get better acquainted about one another. Ideally we are going to want to see all of your current financial institution statements including your brokerage accounts, insurance products, and company retirement plans. Our order of business will be to first identify your primary goals, and get some insight to what your past success and any shortcomings have been. We then measure your risk tolerance and where appropriate help you adjust your thinking in this regard. Finally we look at your overall level of past investment experience with an eye towards measuring and managing expectations.

Fee Schedule

Accounts with Carlson Asset Management are handled in one of two ways:

  1. Fee based Investment Advisory Management with fee schedule tiered by Assets Under Management.
  2. Transactional commission based arrangement, generally used in accounts under $50,000.

Under either arrangement your input and preferences as to security selection are always considered. It is not uncommon for a client to have a large concentrated position in one security with no anticipation of selling. In this arrangement it is usually cheaper and best to hold in a commissioned based account. Conversely, many clients have accounts with more active management and a Fee-Based arrangement is used. We will work with you to decide which arrangement is most cost effective.

Over the last 2 years, Federal Reserve Policy and speeches by Jerome Powell have all had one theme in common: “inflation is too high and the Federal Reserve will use all tools at their disposal to bring it down to 2%.”
